IACS T&E Shortlisted at Greater Manchester Skills Awards 2025

IACS T&E, through its employer partnership with Hopwood Hall College, has been shortlisted within the SME of the Year category at the Greater Manchester (GM) Skills Awards 2025.

A Recognition of Commitment…

The award recognises IACS’ commitment to bridging the skills gap in the green energy sector, following the launch of its pioneering ‘Practitioner in Pipelines for Hydrogen and Utilities’ (PIPHU) programme (derived from the Level 3 Construction Support Technician Apprenticeship), developed and delivered in partnership with Hopwood Hall College and University Centre.

A Proud Employer…

In addition, IACS apprentice Gerrard Ashcroft has also been named a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category. This shortlist is in recognition of Ged’s remarkable resilience and determination to pursue his apprenticeship and future career.

James Baker, Director at IACS Training & Education, comments:

“We have reached a very exciting milestone with our apprenticeship. Our first cohort of apprentices is starting to complete their End Point Assessments, which is the final phase of their journey. So, to be unveiled as a finalist within this category after such a remarkable experience means a great deal.”

“Each of our apprentices has done us proud, not only did they embark on a pioneering apprenticeship, but they have done so with passion, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to be the best they can be. To see Ged shortlisted in this way is a testament to how far he has come – not just in terms of skills, but personally and professionally too.”

A Perfect Example…

The GM Skills Awards celebrates excellence in the further education and skills sector in Greater Manchester.

The PIPHU apprenticeship, which was developed in partnership with Hopwood Hall College and is based at its Middleton campus, is a shining example of what can be achieved when industry and educators come together to address urgent and important skills needs.

Adam Williams, Director of Apprenticeships at Hopwood Hall College, comments:

“Huge congratulations to IACS T&E and Gerrard for being shortlisted at the GM Skills Awards. We love nothing more than seeing our apprenticeship partners, employers and apprentices thrive.

“IACS really are working hard to address the skills gap that is evident within their industry, investing both time and money in supporting the next generation of pipeline inspectors. Gerrard has also achieved a great deal, he is a great example of how belief, hard work and determination pay off – which is why they both deserve to be shortlisted.”

About the Apprenticeship…

The PIPHU apprenticeship, derived from the Construction Support Technician apprenticeship standard, offers a unique blend of classroom learning and on-site experience.

Through two cohorts, 22 apprentices are actively progressing through the programme. A diverse group has been attracted, including four females, which is actively challenging many existing stereotypes held within the industry.

About the Awards…

The GM Skills Awards is brought together through a partnership between the Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network (GMLPN) and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC). The awards will take place on 3rd July at the Manchester Monastery.
