IACS Training & Education (IACS T&E) is celebrating a standout evening at the Greater Manchester Skills Awards 2025, after being named SME of the Year and seeing cohort 1 apprentice Gerrard Ashcroft awarded Apprentice of the Year (Level 2/3).
The awards recognise excellence across Greater Manchester’s further education and skills sector, shining a spotlight on the employers, providers and apprentices who are making a real difference.
Winning SME of the Year is recognition of IACS T&E’s commitment to bridging the skills gap in the green energy sector. The ‘Practitioner in Pipelines for Hydrogen and Utilities’ (PIPHU) programme, derived from the Level 3 Construction Support Technician Apprenticeship, combines classroom learning and real site experience to develop the next generation of pipeline inspectors.
James Baker, Director at IACS T&E, comments:
“We’re thrilled to be named SME of the Year. This award is a reflection of the dedication shown by our entire team, our partners at Hopwood Hall College and our fantastic apprentices.
“To be recognised in such a respected space validates everything we set out to achieve when we launched the PIPHU apprenticeship within the north west. We’re investing in people, in skills, in the region and in the future of our industry.”
The evening was made even more special as Gerrard Ashcroft, one of IACS T&E’s first PIPHU apprentices, was also named Apprentice of the Year (Level 2/3). Ged’s award recognises his resilience and determination to build a meaningful career.
Laura Hewitt, Director at IACS Ltd, adds:
“Ged’s journey has been fantastic. He’s shown what’s possible when someone is given the right opportunity and support. This win is a testament to his commitment - not just professionally, but personally too.”
Joanne Taylor, Vice Principal (Apprenticeships & Future Skills) at Hopwood Hall College, comments:
“Huge congratulations to both IACS T&E and Ged. This is a great example of what happens when industry and education work together with a shared purpose and vision. We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved.”
The PIPHU apprenticeship, developed and delivered in partnership with Hopwood Hall College and University Centre, offers a unique blend of classroom learning and on-site experience. Across two cohorts, apprentices are actively progressing through the programme.
The GM Skills Awards are delivered in partnership by the Greater Manchester Learning Provider Network (GMLPN) and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce (GMCC). The awards ceremony took place on 3rd July at the Manchester Monastery.
