Choosing A Practical Path

Harrison always knew university wasn’t the route for him.

Keen to get stuck into the working world, he originally started an apprenticeship in an office-based role. While there were promises of a degree, it never materialised – so he decided to explore something new. Thanks to his mum, a careers advisor, that opportunity came through IACS Ltd.

Harrison comments:

“IACS had been presenting at a meeting my mum was in. She told me to check them out and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t know anything about pipeline inspection at the time, but I saw the long-term opportunity and just went for it.”

Now part of cohort two of the ‘Practitioner in Pipelines for Hydrogen and Utilities’ (PIPHU) programme, Harrison is well on his way to building a career.

Learning on the job…

Harrison is a big believer in hands-on learning and that’s where this apprenticeship, which is derived from the Level 3 Construction Support Technician Apprenticeship, stood out for him.

He adds:

“You can revise and pass an exam, but it’s different when you’re on-site and actually doing the work. Shadowing a Senior Pipeline Inspector (SPI) has been the biggest help – even when it comes to writing reports.”

Looking ahead…

For Harrison, the apprenticeship is more than just a job – it is a long-term career.

“I’m really enjoying the apprenticeship. The support is great, whether it’s something personal or something work-related. You always know who to go to.”

Looking to the future, Harrison already has his sights set on becoming a Senior Pipeline Inspector. With a clear path for growth and continued learning, he knows he’s made the right choice.

His advice to others thinking about their next steps?

“University isn’t the only option. Apprenticeships can lead to just as much – if not more – especially if you know you want to get started in your career. Whatever that may be.”

About the apprenticeship…

The ‘Practitioner in Pipelines for Hydrogen and Utilities’ (PIPHU) apprenticeship provides a mixture of classroom-based learning at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre with practical on-site experience.

Each apprentice starts on a competitive salary, with opportunities to achieve performance-related incentives. Successful apprentices are offered a permanent role at IACS Ltd upon completion of the PIPHU apprenticeship.
